MARIA GONZALEZ
Artist Statement

Consider who, what, when, where, why, and how.

Consider definition and translation.

Consider inflection and resonance.

Consider the difficulty of answering simple questions.

The ongoing process of enlarging both the content and form of my artmaking vocabulary has resulted in bodies of work that, instead of style or media, share the common underpinning of narrative visual investigation.

Accumulated “banks” of images, objects, text and sounds serve as my source material – examined for the questions they provide and the answers they propose.

From these diverse sources come extended works that consider objects, text, images and sounds not only for what they represent, define and document but also for what they imply, recall, evoke and affirm.
